Today I learned that Moderna (and maybe Pharma industry?) has better margins than Facebook.

Moderna made Net Income (Income after taxes) of 2.7 Billion on a Revenue of 4.3 B. That is an amazing 63% Return. And this is > 60% return on Net Income not Gross Profit.

Moderna grew at a rapid pace while maintaining these huge profit margins. Moderna’s revenue in Q1 2021 was 1.7B and Net come was 1.26B. (~73% profit margin)

Obviously COVID and more importantly Moderna’s ability to create one of the most effective vaccines helped with their (deserved) growth.

In 2019, before COVID, their annual revenue was 60M and their Net Loss was 500M. If I had to guess I would guess that their revenues prior to 2019 would have followed a similar pattern.

Moderna is risky in true sense of the word. They can go bankrupt if their product stops working or if there is no demand (no infectious disease).

But if the future is co-existence with COVID and inevitable high demand for effective vaccines all over the world, and potential requirement for boosters, Moderna is well positioned to continue developing and manufacturing their effective vaccine.
